CAT revokes senior Tamil Nadu IPS officer Jaffar Sait's suspension

CHENNAI: In a significant ruling, the suspension of a top cop and influential IPS officer in Tamil Nadu, Jaffer Sait, has been set aside by the Madras bench of Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).

Revocation of suspension, with an additional direction to reinstate him, was passed by a bench headed by judicial member Justice S Arumughaswamy, the IPS officer's senior advocate, Vijay Narayan, told TOI on Tuesday.

Sait, an additional director-general of police cadre officer, was the intelligence chief and wielded enormous clout during the DMK regime between 2006 and 2011.

The present AIADMK government, first shunted him out to an obscure post at Mandapam initially, and then placed him under suspension more than four and half years ago.

The Centre refused to ratify the suspension and its extension. However, the Tamil Nadu government persisted with the punishment.
